These headaches are the phenomena of Short Lasting Unilateral Neuralgia with Conjunctival Tearing, (SUN CT), Chronic Paroxysmal Hemicrania, Hemicrania Continua and Cluster Headache.
These are pain states involving the distribution of the trigeminal nerve, that is, the nerve which supplies sensation to the face. It also supplies motor power to the muscles of chewing (mastication).
The pain is described on one side of the face only, and is associated with a headache. An internet search using the above names as key words, will provide greater detail than provided here.
Treatment is with specific medications including drugs for nerve pain, (Pregabalin, Gabapentin, Tricyclic antidepressants), and the use of Indomethacin, (an anti-inflammatory medication to which these pain state respond specifically)
The technique of Occipital Nerve Blocks with steroid and Botox and Occipital Nerve Stimulation may be very helpful in intractable cases. This may also be helpful in Migraine.
