Symptoms
Sitting is painful. The cause is often not known but trauma is common. Osteoporosis increases the risk.
Diagnosis
This is made from the history of pain with sitting but in addition, pressure over the coccyx bone with a finger will be very uncomfortable. No particular investigations are helpful.
Treatment
Surgical excision is regarded as a last resort with steroid injections and a technique known as Ganglion Impar block, (see X-ray image below), with pulsed radiofrequency denervation often being very successful in the long term.
